ISLAMABAD: A new scandal of mega corruption worth Rs. 920 million in Pakistan Railway (PR) has been revealed.
According to document received by Online, the railway officials has embezzled and financial mismanagement of Rs.920 million in reconstruction and overhauling of railway track from Khanawal to Raiwand.
The audit report of 2014 says that about 159 weak bridges of Khanawal to Raiwand railway track has to be overhauled and reconstruct under this project and PC-1 has been prepared for it. Approximately Rs. 277 million has been allocated for the reconstruction and overhauling of these bridges. The contract for this purpose has been awarded to concerned construction company.
The Project Director has sanctioned Rs.920 million to concerned contractors while taking high officials of Pakistan Railway into confidence.
The surplus payment made by officials of Pakistan Railway was identified in audit report of 2014.
“According to PC-1 Rs. 234 million has to spent on overhauling and reconstruction of existing bridges while Rs. 43 million on signals. The corrupt officials has paid surplus amount of Rs.787 million for the construction of bridges while Rs.130 million for the construction and installation of signals without seeking prior permission from Ministry of Planning “, the report added.
Sources told that high-level investigation has been commenced against Federal Minister Railway Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Secretary, Chairman Railway and Project Director.
