ISLAMABAD: Journalists covering the Senate session on Monday staged a walk out from the press gallery to record their protest on the issue of torture on a journalist Ahmad Noorani in Islamabad. After negotiations with Senators Mushahidullah Khan and Taj Haider the journalist ended their protest.
Speaking on the issue in the House, the members strongly condemned the incident and expressed solidarity with the journalists. They termed the attack as an attack on the freedom of media.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Senate said attacks on journalists are unacceptable. He said the journalists have played a vital role for strengthening of democracy in the country. He said the parliament will safeguard the rights of the journalists.
He referred the matter to the Senate Standing Committee on Interior with a direction to submit report within twenty days. He asked the government to present the bill regarding the protection of the journalists in the parliament within one month.
