PML-N, ANP likely to oppose dual nationality amendment bill

Dated: 2012-07-06

ISLAMABAD: The Awami National Party (ANP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Thursday expressed reservations over the amendment bill for the dual nationality law.

The ANP said that the law should only be applicable for presidents, prime ministers, the army leadership and judges.

The PML-N also criticized the contempt of court amendment bill and said that the bill is equivalent to restricting the judiciary’s authority. Sources said that the party will also oppose the bill.

Haji Adeel, a central leader of the government allied ANP, presented the party’s stance when he was contacted by President Asif Ali Zardari.

Adeel said, “If such laws are not enforced, then people like Mansoor Ijaz can also become the president of Pakistan one day.”

Earlier on Wednesday, the federal cabinet had approved amendment bills pertaining to dual nationality and contempt of court laws.

It was ordered in the cabinet session that the dual nationality amendment bill be brought before the National Assembly for discussion and approval.
