"We have more than a dozen American companies participating in the conference to explore investment opportunities, including big companies like DuPont, PricewaterhouseCoopers, General Electric, ExxonMobil," US state department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters.
"So we think this is an excellent initiative to strengthen private sector investment, to strengthen regional links, and shows great leadership on the Indian Government's part," she said.
The US had encouraged American firms interested in Afghanistan to participate, Nuland said.
"So we are very much appreciative," she said noting that US secretary of state Hillary Clinton had mentioned it during her Delhi and visit and again when the Indian delegation led by external affairs minister came to Washington for the India-US strategic dialogue.
