Shamed Butt out of jail

Dated: 2012-06-22

LONDON: Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has been released from prison a mere seven months into his 30-month sentence.

Butt, Mohammad Asif and fellow seamer Mohammad Amir were in November 2011 jailed for their roles in the purposeful bowling of no-balls in the clash against England at The Oval two years ago.

Asif and Amir, initially set to remain imprisoned for 12 and six month respectively, were released earlier this year, with Butt afforded the same leniency under British law earlier this week.

The International Cricket Council anti-corruption tribunal had advised the game's governing body and the Pakistan Cricket Board to rehabilitate the three players, who have all been banned from the game for five years.

Amir recently appeared in a ICC anti-corruption educational video, warning future players of the pitfalls of spot-fixing.
