President says excessive loadshedding intolerable

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed displeasure over the increasing unscheduled loadshedding in different parts of the country resulting in great inconvenience for the people.

Chairing an emergency meeting on current power shortage and energy crisis in the country Thursday at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, he said that this situation was intolerable and had to be addressed satisfactorily by all state functionaries.

The President said there was a great need for coordination at all levels and directed that all federal government functionaries dealing with Oil & Gas and Power to remain in Islamabad for the next week and to meet regularly for monitoring the situation on one hand and to take immediate corrective measures to rectify the situation, on the other.

The President also directed that he should be kept informed on daily basis about the power situation by the functionaries concerned.

The President also directed that effective measures have be taken for totally eliminating unscheduled loadshedding and suggested that a central control room be also set up in the Ministry of Water & Power for this purpose, if necessary.

Syed Naveed Qamar, Federal Minister for Water & Power, briefed the meeting about toady’s incident that resulted in massive power failure in different parts of the country.

Petroleum Minister Dr. Asim Hussain gave a briefing on the supply of furnace oil and gas to the power plants. He said that the supply of oil & gas has been ensured which would result in stabilizing power generation by tomorrow (Friday) morning.

The meeting was informed that TFCs of Rs. 82 billion will be floated after the approval of ECC next week for meeting the circular debt liability and further stabilizing power generation.

Those who were present during the meeting included among others Dr. Asim Hussain, Minister for Petroleum, Syed Naveed Qamar, Federal Minister for Water & Power, Federal Secretaries of Water & Power, Finance and Petroleum Ministries, MD PEPCO Mr. Rasool Khan Mahsood, MD SNGPL Mr. Arif Hameed, MD SSGCL Mr. Azeem Iqbal Siddiqui and Ex-Chairman APTMA Mr. Gohar Ejaz.
