PBC appeals for Black Day on May 12 mayhem

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has appealed to the Legal fraternity to observe Black Day on May 12 throughout Pakistan in condemnation of the Carnage of May 12, 2007.

Mr. Akhtar Hussain, Vice-Chairman and Mr. Burhan Moazzam Malik, Chairman, Executive Committee of the PBC have requested the Members of the Bar as well as Members of the Civil Society for observing Nation-wide Black Day.

All the Bar Associations throughout the Country will hold protest meetings in their respective Bar Rooms to reiterate their strong condemnation of the tragic incident of May 12, when at the behest of the then dictatorial regime of Gen. Pervaiz Musharraf not only Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was virtually detained at Karachi Airport and denied safe access to the High Court Bar Association, Karachi where he was scheduled to address a Lawyers gathering but a large scale killing of innocent citizens also took place and number of Lawyers were burnt alive in their offices.

The Lawyers while observing Black Day tomorrow will hoist Black Flags at offices of their respective Bar Associations and would also hold protest meetings to strongly condemn the instigative conduct of then Government for letting the tragic incident to happen and inaction of successive Governments to hold high level inquiry for fixing responsibility and bringing the culprits to book and awarding them punishment under the law.
