Exigency reconstruction necessary for vibrant, coherent UN: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Thursday stressed that UN reform were urgently required to make the UN a more coherent and vibrant organisation geared to deal with social, political, security, diplomatic and economic challenges faced by the world.

Chairing the UN Reforms Panel meeting at the Prime Minister’s house on Wednesday, he said that the bold decision would be required to restructure UN to meet the requirements of an increasingly globalized world.

The meeting was attended by the penalties including President of the CIDA, Robert Greenhil, Director General for Development Cooperation Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sweden Ruth Javoby , Secretary Economic Business and Agriculture Affairs Department of Sate, US Josette S. Shiner, Yousif Samiullah, Uday Abayankar and Aslak Burn.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need for taking steps for better coordination among the UN organisations. UN should have a country strategy for all member states, he added.

He proposed setting up of humanitarian relief assistance fund and a dedicated UN office for disaster management. Separate funds need to be setup for emergency disaster relief post rehabilitation activities, he observed.

He highlighted the need to adopt a result-oriented approach in the restructuring process and said that a careful balance between vision and theories should be kept to ensue success.

The panel will hold a series of meeting during their stay in Islamabad to finalize proposals to be submitted to the Geneva meeting next month.

Minister of State attended the meeting among others for Economic Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar and Environment Malik Amin Aslam Khan and senior officials.
