Pak has taken number of measures for peace in region: Soomro

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Mr. Mohammadmian Soomro has said that Pakistan stood for peace in the region and has taken a number of initiatives for the purpose.

He made this observation during a conversation with a US congressional delegation led by Republican Senator Dan Burton which called on him at his residence here last night.

Chairman Senate pointed out that it was almost one year ago that Islamabad declaration was signed and issued which called for single Asian Parliament and single Asian Currency.

He said that the said declaration was a testimony to the fact that the two countries wanted peace in the region. Mr. Mohammedmian Soomro lauded the keen interest shown by the US Congressmen in making a visit to offer their condolence to the victims of the earthquake and remarked that their visit at this juncture was very meaningful. He thanked the Government and the people of United States for their prompt support and assistance in the wake of the deadly earthquake.

The leader of US Congressional delegation Senator Dan Burton and the members of his team thanked the government and the people of Pakistan for the warm welcome. Mr. Burton said that he and the members of his team have come here to offer condolences on the terrible earthquake that caused havoc in the area. He appreciated Pakistan’s willingness to discuss thorny issues with India. Senator Burton was of the view that this would be a step towards peace. He hoped that the process of consultations and negotiations between the two countries will continue.

Senator Dr. Abdullah Riar and Senator Muhammad Azam Swati also spoke on the occasion. They lauded the valuable support rendered by the US government and the people of United States in this hour of crisis. Later, the Senate Chairman hosted a dinner in honor of the US delegation. The dinner was attended by Federal Ministers, Ministers of State, Senators, MNAs, diplomats, businessmen, journalists and senior government officers.
