22 killed, 23 injured as bus plunges into ravine

HAVELIAN: At least 22 people were killed while 23 others including women and children critically injured when an over speeding passenger bus with 50 passengers on board plunged into a ravine here on Monday.

Some 15 passengers died on the spot while the injured were rushed to Havelian and Abbottabad hospitals and where five more persons succumbed to their fatal injuries.

Muhammad Nawaz, the driver of bus RIR 594, who is hovering between life and death after sustaining critical injuries in the incident told Online that the tragedy occurred after the axle of the bus gave in.

"The death toll could have been restricted if expeditious arrangement of ambulances were made," said one Akram present at the scene of tragedy.

However, the lone rescue agency Edhi Foundation once again rose to the occasion and made arrangement of ambulances from Abbottabad, Manshera and Taxila.

The rescuers reportedly had to face enormous difficulty in pulling out the victims from the bus since it (bus) had been crumpled after falling from a considerable altitude. Later, a crane was arranged and some 18 corpses have been pulled out of the damned bus.

From among the dead some fifteen persons have been identified till filling of this report including Subedar Ghafoor, Nargis Bibi, Sharafat Hussain, Tahir Khan, Muhammad Aslam, Shaukat, an unidentified woman wife of Shabir and a child son of Saeed, Naheed Bibi, Sajid, Hafiz Shakeel, Shaukat Mehfooz, Nargis Shaheen, Tahir Mehmood, Sharafat Hussain, Master Aslam, Safaida Jan, Gulnaz, Muhammad Arshad, Muhammad Tariq, Makhmal Din, Imtiaz.

The identity of remaining eight deceased, including dead bodies of three males and four females is yet to be ascertained.

Most of the deceased belonged to Haripur, Havelian, Abbottabad and the adjoining areas.

The injured were identified as Habib-ur-Rehman, Abid, Anwar, Simra, a woman daughter of Sadiq, Shehnaz, Saiqa, Bibi Maria.

The incident is a chilling reminder of the inadequate rescue services available to combat such like tragedies.
