Afghanistan produces 8.200 tons of opium a year

TEHRAN: Approximately 2.500 tons of narcotic drugs, produced in Afghanistan, are being sneaked into Iran each year, and one quarter of these drugs stay in the country. Mohammad Reza Jahani, the deputy head of Iran’s Drugs Control Headquarters, claims that Afghanistan produces roughly 8.200 tons of narcotic drugs per year. From a total of 2.500 narcotic drugs sneaked into Iran, some 700 tons are intended for consumption in the country. The police usually seize some 500 tons of narcotic drugs. The rest - some 1.300 tons - are transiting via Iran to other countries. According to UN Office on Drugs and Crime, opium production in Afghanistan has soared to record levels - from 6.100 tons in 2006 to 8.200 in 2007. According to official estimations, Afghanistan now accounts for more than 90 percent of the world’s opiates Afghanistan.
