Govt warns of a massive tidal wave in Arabian Sea

ISLAMABAD: The director National Disaster Management Cell (NDMC) Lt.Gen. Farooq Ahmad has warned all provincial governments of a massive tidal wave in the Arabian Sea on 09th August.

Addressing a press conference he warned all the provincial governments that it might affect Pakistan as well, advising them to take precautions against any unwonted situation arising out of the situation, well in advance.

Carrying on his press conference, he informed that recent rains and floods in the Country have affected 5000 villages, 5500 houses destroyed, 2 million population suffered, while, 50,000 persons were displaced.

He said that 483 relief camps have been setup, with death toll at 330, and 1224 persons missing.

He disclosed the PM has initially announced a relief grant of Rs.15000, which would be distributed by Provincial governments, while Balochistan and NWFP have received 77369 tents, 60,600 blankets, and 5500 tons of rations. Water purification plants would be installed in the calamity hit areas.

According to his statement foreign aid of 18.24 billion has been pledged , and an accord with World Bank in this regard is due soon.
