RAWALPINDI: The court martial proceeding against Brigadier Ali Khan, who is accused of conspiring to overthrow the government, has been completed, according to a BBC Urdu report.

Khan was arrested on May, 6 last year while the court martial proceedings headed by a major general began in December in Sialkot and ended on June 20 after six months in Rawalpindi.

The BBC said five military officers testified in the court that Brig Ali Khan incited them for revolt against civilian and military leadership of the country.

According to military rules, the court would send its ruling to its commanding officer, who is now corps commander Gujranwala, and finally it would be presented to the army chief before it is made public. According to BBC report, the process may take weeks or several months and Mr Khan could be handed down capital punishment.

Khan’s lawyer Inamur Rahim told the BBC that he had contended in the court that court martial proceedings could not be initiated as his client had retired before the court initiated the proceedings.

He said he told the court that the proceedings were result of ill intent as his client was singled out for his popular demand of action against those responsible for US raid against Osama bin Laden.

Mr Rahim said he had also moved the Lahore High Court but despite the issuance of six notices the army could not turn up to respond to his points.
